So this afternoon, I met up with a friend of mine from my university days to have my first proper wander of the 2011 Christmas markets. The market has been going on for a good few years now. I know the Christmas wheel first came in 1999 (for the millennium) but I can’t remember if the markets arrived that year as well. Anyway, they are a highlight and a great place for some crafty gifts, a warm mug of mulled wine (or in my case Kinderspunsch) and perhaps a crepe filled with nutella!
The snow globe is there again this year, however, with some more stalls in the Highland Christmas Market the light up reindeer and christmas trees weren’t. ![]()

This picture is from one of my favourite stalls at the German Christmas Market. They have some nutcrackers, russian dolls and some great nativity scenes. I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about nativity scenes as so often they depict a completely ridiculous picture of it. Pine trees and snow, sparkly stables, everyone with white white skin etc.
The German Christmas Market is also where I spotted this guy. With a dog in his backpack. As you do! It was a very cute dog, and looked a little bit overwhelmed by the busyness of the markets. I was trying to be subtle about taking the photo, which is how it ended up blurry!
Because Princes Street is still closed to traffic, the Santa Train normally in the West Gardens seems to be doing the rounds of Princes Street instead. It almost ran me and my friend over as we ran across for some warmth at Jenners’ toy department. Where we found a nativity I’ve not seen done before – Mary, Joseph and Jesus under an ornate teepee with a Christmas pine tree outside. Thanks Playmobil.
The markets will be here until the end of the Hogmanay Celebrations…so make sure you take the time to go down and have a wander. Just be sure to wrap up warmly!
